The Villa d’Alzine is located in the Roussillon region of France, at the foot of the Pyrénées. Situated in a unique position, 320 metres above sea level, it enjoys uninterrupted 180˚ views from Mount Canigou (2784 metres) to the plain of Roussillon and then around to the Mediterranean Sea which is 15 kilometres away. The views are stunning and it is only a short walk down the hill to the town of Céret, famous for its association with Picasso, Cherry Festivals, Catalan dancing and 310 days of sunshine.

The house itself is set in several hectares of land on the mountain side. A path at the back of the house leading up to the top of Fontfrède is the old donkey track where allied airmen escaped into Spain during WW2. There is a monument at the top of the mountain to the Free French. Laurie Lee also described this path in his book "As I walked out one Midsummer Morning."
